Norbec case studies: L-1650 Frames

The aluminum frame L-1650 is the result of constant collaboration between Norbec and its customers. It’s a versatile excessive-use door frame that meets several needs expressed by users: Resisting violent impacts, limiting condensation problems around the opening, and allowing fast and easy maintenance, installation or replacement.

Before
1990

Issue
Wooden frame covered with aluminum.
Presence of wood, conducive to deterioration

Early
1990

Solution

Launch of the L-1000 framework made by Norbec

  • Made of aluminium extrusion
  • Frame in 3 sections
  • Each section is pre-assembled in factory

Before
2000

Issue

The L-1000 frame acts as a thermal bridge and  stiffness could be improved

  • Condensation around the opening
  • Ice formation around the opening
  • Impossible to install the frame in continuous panel walls
  • Desire to improve the rigidity of the assembly

Early
2000

Solution

Launch of the L-1600 made by Norbec

  • Integration of a thermal break
  • Integration of a groove system for heating wire
  • The frame sections are welded together
  • Rear frame option available, factory installed

Before
2008

Issue

The L-1600 concept has to be optimized to facilitate manufacturing

  • Offers little flexibility for projects installed in phases (bulkheads before doors)
  • Need to provide doors faster

Early
2008

Solution

Launch of the L-1650 framework made by Norbec

  • Simplification of the concept by modulating the accessories required for sliding doors and for embedding in concrete
  • Creation of removable rear frames and integration of a connector for electrical connections

Extrusion details

  • 1 Rear frame in three sections, to be installed on site. Available in 3-4-5 inches
  • 2 Thermal break made from high resistance resin, limiting the risk of condensation around the opening
  • 3 A notch system able to receive supports for sliding door rails
  •  1/4 in thickness
  • 5 Groove system for the heating wire installation. A lid makes for easier access and quick replacement
  • 6 A notches system able to receive flanges for fastening the frame to the concrete slab

Frame details

  • 1 3/4 NPT connector for electrical connections
  • 2 Finishing cover for the heating wire grooves
  • 3 Non-visible welds between the front sections of the frame
